The Holy Synod of the Greek-Orthodox Church of Antioch meeting in the monastery of Our Lady of Balamand this morning has elected the archbishop of Europe, metropolitan John Yazigi, as the 158th Greek-Orthodox patriarch of Antioch and all the East, with the name of John X.
The new patriarch is a friend of long standing of the prior and the community; he is a spiritual man, open to dialogue, and visited us recently, on the occasion of the meeting at Bose of the St Ireneus group of Catholic-Orthodox dialogue, of which he is co-president.
We share the great joy at his election and we are close to him and to all the Christians of the Antiochene Church with ardent intercession, especially in these times of great trial.
