30° International Ecumenical Conference on Orthodox Spirituality
BASIL THE GREAT, TEACHER OF CHRISTIAN LIFE

Monastero di Bose, 3-6 september 2024
in collaboration with the Orthodox Churches

Follow us

Saint Basil is placed in the middle of that creative period that goes from Constantine to the Council of Chalcedon and left his mark in many areas of Christian life: in theology, liturgy, canon law, social teaching, monasticism and spirituality its influence has remained great to this day, not only in the Eastern Churches but also in the Christian West.

The conference is open to all. Papers will be delivered in Italian, English, French and Greek, and simultaneous translation will be provided into Italian, English and Greek.
Arrivals are scheduled for Monday, 2 September; departures on Friday, 6 September afternoon or Saturday, 7 September morning.
To register for the conference it is necessary to contact the organisational secretariat.

29th International Ecumenical Conference on Orthodox Spirituality
THE WISDOM OF THE DESERT:
The Sayings of the Fathers and Mothers

Monastero di Bose, 5-8 september 2023
in collaboration with the Orthodox Churches

Follow us

Short, incisive, paradoxical, profound but also practical and often humorous, the Sayings of the Desert Fathers or Apophthegmata Patrum are the fruit of the experience of monks who lived in the Egyptian deserts in the 4th and 5th centuries. Subsequently transcribed and assembled into collections between the 5th and 6th century, most likely in Palestine, the Sayings were soon translated into all the major languages of the ecumene, spread throughout all ecclesial traditions, and still today are among the most widely loved texts in all Christian spiritual literature. Our conference, combining the historical-literary perspective with the theological-spiritual one, intends to explore some of the main themes of their spiritual teaching, bringing out, along with the common lines, also the points of tension and different perspectives. We will also ask ourselves why this condensate of human wisdom and evangelical radicalism has crossed the centuries in an uninterrupted manner, and is still able to inspire, in an ever fresh way, not only monks and nuns but more generally the men and women of our day.

The conference is open to all. Also this year, due to the difficulties of movement from some Eastern European countries, simultaneous translation will be ensured only in Italian, English and Greek. Arrivals are expected on Monday, 4 September; departures on Friday 8 September in the afternoon or Saturday, 10 September in the morning. Accommodation will be at the Monastery of Bose. To register for the Conference, it is necessary to call the Secretariat and send the pdfregistration form via email before the 1st of June and by 25 August 2023, until all places have been filled. The Secretariat is available for any further information.

ST. ISAAC OF NINEVEH
and His Spiritual Teaching

Monastery of Bose, 6-9 settembre 2022
in collaboration with the Orthodox Churches

follow us

Isaac, a monk who was elected bishop of Nineveh and resigned after only five months to return to the anchoritic life, lived in Mesopotamia in the seventh century; he is truly an "ecumenical saint”, loved and read far beyond the boundaries of the Church to which he belonged, the ancient Eastern Syrian Church, since the fifth century no longer in communion with the rest of Christianity. Our conference, which gathers in Bose some of the leading experts on Isaac's work, intends to highlight the many aspects of his rich spiritual teaching, which, founded on the two cornerstones of humility and the infinite mercy of God, still continues today to touch the hearts of believers and to be an inexhaustible source of inspiration for the Christian life, a strong appeal to rediscover the heart of the Gospel, attaining the deep peace and joy that are a gift of God and opening oneself to universal compassion.

The exterior of churches
Monastery of Bose
National Office for the Cultural Patrimony of the Church — Italian Bishops’ Conference

Bose, 2–4 June 2016

The building for worship is the most visible image that every religious tradition offers of itself in public space. In giving form to its churches, the Church too has given visible form to itself over the centuries, up to creating in contemporary architecture a series of images of churches: tent, boat, mantle, edifice… A church is seen first of all from outside, and its exterior distinguishes it as much as its interior. What is here at stake, however, is the need for the church to be recognizable as such, even in the plurality of its forms. The architect’s task is to form the body of a church, to give it a posture, to situate it in the city, and to give it a face with its facade. Theologians, historians of architecture and of art express the meaning of the rites outside a church, of the threshold of hospitality, and of the art of the doors. Architects of international fame present their experiences in planning and executing the exterior of a church.

MATTHEW THE POOR
A Contemporary Desert Father

21 - 22 May 2016
Monastery of Bose

Spiritual father of the monastery of St. Macarius in Egypt, he has been a major figure of the Coptic Orthodox Church.
He is a spiritual author, appreciated all over the world: his life of prayer has made him a point of reference for all those who seek in Christ a meaning to their existence.

We have completely renewed the section of our website offered to young people, in which we propose texts in order to help them searching for the sense of their life.
You can find also presentations of the future events: workcamps, autumn meetings and meetings organized in the last days of the year. These pages are intended to be a space of dialogue. You can contact the brothers and sisters in charge of the hospitality who arrange these pages, making your suggestions and asking your questions.

“There is only one way to pray:
the way of the Holy Spirit,
who adapts prayer to each person
according to his or her temperament...”
